The following is a true story 🙂
Daniel, a bright 7-year-old, eagerly awaits his dad’s midday break from his remote work to pick him up from school around 2:30. Upon arriving home, they hastily devour their lunch in just 15 minutes before his dad returns to his office to resume work on his computer until 5:00 PM.
Throughout these two hours, Daniel interrupts his father several times, pleading for playtime together. “Daddy, can you come play with me?” Daniel’s voice echoes into his dad’s workspace. “Daddy, I want to go outside”. “Daddy, can I go to my friend’s house?”.
“I can’t talk right now. I’m in a meeting. Okay?”. How about you watch some TV, practice the piano, draw, or play games?” His dad’s response becomes a familiar refrain during their routine.
This pattern persists for months until a particular afternoon when Daniel proudly presents a school project: a makeshift laptop crafted from a cardboard box. As his mom arrives home around 4 PM, Daniel eagerly unveils his creation, mimicking his father’s words with a playful grin.
“Mommy, I can’t talk right now. I’m in a meeting. Okay?” With a pretend keyboard before him, he immerses himself in his imaginative world, typing away on his cardboard laptop.
While children often learn to adapt and create their imaginative world to fill the void, we share this story as a reminder to busy parents about the significance of balancing work responsibilities with spending quality time with their children, encouraging open communication and finding moments to connect even amidst busy schedules.
